Choose your destination

Four countries, four different ways to hire a car. Here is what to expect in each.

Balkans

Albania

Pick up at Tirana Airport and you are about 35 min from the beaches at Durrës, about 2 h from Berat and about 4 h 15 min from Sarandë on the Riviera in the south. You can add a package for Montenegro, Greece and other neighbours when you book.

ShkodërTiranaDurrësVlorëHimarëSarandëTIA

Airport: Tirana (TIA). Cars from €6 a day.

Montenegro

Fly into Podgorica or Tivat. The two airports are 83 km apart, about 2 h by road, and from Podgorica Airport you reach Budva in about 1 h 30 min and Kotor in about 1 h 45 min. Many cars offer cross-border packages, from the neighbouring countries up to the whole EU.

BudvaTGDTIV

Airports: Podgorica (TGD), Tivat (TIV). Cars from €15 a day.

Eastern Mediterranean

Crete

Heraklion and Chania airports are 160 km apart, about 3 h by road. Choose the airport nearest your stay. Well over half of the cars here are manual, so filter for automatic if you need it. Some cars need a credit card. Driving across a border is not allowed.

HERCHQ

Airports: Heraklion (HER), Chania (CHQ). Cars from €3 a day.

Cyprus

Land at Larnaca or Paphos: the two airports are 124 km apart, about 1 h 45 min by road. Choose your arrival airport when searching for a car. Almost every car is automatic. Some cars offer a cross-border option; check the rental terms and ask the company where it applies.

LCAPFO

Airports: Larnaca (LCA), Paphos (PFO). Cars from €11 a day.

Why book with SabreCar

No credit card or deposit on many cars.

Local companies often keep payment simple. See how it works.

The price before you pay.

Each car shows its total, its deposit, its cover levels and any one-way or cross-border fee before you book.

Small payment now.

You pay an advance of 15 to 20% when you book and the rest to the rental company when you collect the car.

Local companies, clear terms.

You rent from a local company at the airport or in town. Its name and phone number are on your booking voucher.

What SabreCar is

SabreCar is a car hire booking site for Albania, Montenegro, Crete and Cyprus. We do not own any cars. Our search shows cars from local rental companies, with the full price, the deposit, the insurance options and each company’s rules on the car before you book.

When you book, your rental contract is with the local company. It sends you a voucher with its name and phone number, and it is the company you meet at pickup and deal with about the car. Bookings, payments and cancellations run through our booking partner’s platform, under the booking rules you accept at checkout.

If the car is not available

If a company cannot provide the car you booked because of a breakdown or another reason outside its control, it must give you a car of the same or a higher class, on the same terms and at the same price.

Renting from a local company

The cars in our search come from local rental companies. That changes how renting works:

Payment rules are often easier.

See no deposit and no credit card below.

Delivery to you.

On many cars you can choose delivery to your hotel or another address in town instead of collecting at the airport.

Someone meets you.

At the airport the company meets you as shown on your voucher. How and where varies by company, so read the voucher before you travel.

You check the car together.

Look the car over with the company at pickup and at return, and note any marks, so nothing is disputed later.

You call them directly.

If your flight is late or plans change, ring the number on your voucher.

Arriving late or early?

Search with your real arrival time. Some cars cannot be collected at night, and if a company charges for a late or early handover, the fee is shown before you pay.

Car hire with no deposit

A no-deposit car means nothing is held on your card or paid in cash as a security deposit when you collect it. You still pay the rental itself and any extras you chose.

How to find them: tick “No deposit” in the search filters. Each car also shows its deposit amount (or none) before you book.

Another way to zero: on many cars the top insurance level, Full Coverage Plus, removes the deposit. It is not offered on every car, so check the car’s insurance options.

Still bring: your licence and the payment card or cash the car asks for, because the rest of the rental is paid at pickup.

Where they are most common

Cretewell over half of the cars
Albaniaabout half of the cars
Cyprusabout a third of the cars
Montenegrosome cars

Car hire with no credit card

Many travellers only have a debit card. With local companies that is rarely a problem.

Albaniaalmost every car needs no credit card
Montenegrovery few cars ask for one
Creteabout a third ask for a credit card
Cyprusalmost every car needs no credit card

In Crete, use the “No credit card” filter.

Paying with a debit card or cash: the advance you pay when booking can be paid by card online. The rest is paid to the company at pickup, by the methods shown on the car; some take cash or a debit card.

When a credit card is required: it must be a physical card with raised (embossed) numbers, in the main driver’s name, and you must bring it to pickup. Some companies accept a debit card instead; the car and your voucher say which.

Car types and prices

Price per day for a week from mid-November 2026, across the four countries.

Economy cars are typically the cheapest everywhere. Automatics cost more but are the norm in Cyprus and common in Albania and Montenegro; in Crete well over half of the cars are manual.

What you need to rent a car

Driving licence

Your national licence, valid until the end of the rental. Copies and digital licences are not accepted. In Albania, Montenegro and Cyprus the details must be in Latin letters.

International Driving Permit

In Albania, Montenegro and Cyprus, strongly recommended if your licence is only valid in the country that issued it. In Crete the terms recommend one with every licence, and some companies may refuse a rental without it.

Payment

The card or cash the car asks for at pickup, and a credit card in the main driver’s name if the car requires one.

Your booking voucher

Sent by email after you book. It names the rental company and its phone number, says where and how they meet you, and shows whether your car needs a credit card or takes a debit card. Keep it on your phone for pickup; you also need it if you cancel.

A phone you can be reached on

The number you give when booking must be reachable the day before pickup and throughout the rental, by call or messenger such as WhatsApp or Viber. Rental companies do not accept complaints if they could not reach you.

Age and experience

Each car shows its own minimum age and years of driving. In Albania some cars can be hired from 18; others need 21 or more and up to three years’ experience.

How booking works

  1. Search

Your airport or town and your dates.

  2. Choose the car and options

Compare price, deposit and payment rules, then add insurance, a cross-border package or extras.

  3. Pay the advance

15 to 20% of the rental, online.

  4. Collect the car

Pay the rest to the company and check the car together.

Changing or cancelling

  • Cancel for free up to 7 days before pickup (30 days for luxury cars and convertibles), or up to 24 hours before if your booking includes the “Free cancellation” option.
  • A payment service fee of 6% of the amount paid is not refunded. The rest of the advance comes back within 14 days of your request.
  • Cancelling later, or not turning up, means the advance is kept.
  • To change a booking you cancel it and book again.

Driving across borders and one-way hire

Across a border: the car has to come back to the country you hired it in, but you can drive abroad and back with a cross-border package added when you book.

From AlbaniaPackages for Montenegro, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Croatia (through Montenegro) and Greece.
From MontenegroThree levels, from the neighbouring countries up to the whole EU and Switzerland.
From CreteDriving across a border is not allowed under the rental terms.
From CyprusSome cars offer a cross-border option; ask the company where it applies.

Each car shows its own package and fee. Tell the company before you cross.

One-way within a country

Collect in one town and return in another, with the drop-off fee included in the price shown. Between the two Montenegro airports it is often free; between Heraklion and Chania, or Larnaca and Paphos, the fee is typically €50 to €100, depending on the direction.

Between countries

You cannot collect a car in one country and return it in another. The car must come back to the country where you hired it. A cross-border package lets you drive abroad and back where permitted; it does not allow a drop-off in another country.

When to book

CountryLowest typical priceHighest typical price
AlbaniaJanuary to March, typically €30 a dayAugust, typically €50
MontenegroApril, typically €42 a dayAugust, typically €65
CreteMarch, typically €34 a dayAugust, typically €77
CyprusFebruary and March, typically €41 a daySeptember and October, typically €59

Summer dates for next year are still opening: far fewer cars show for June to August than for winter, so check again in spring and book once your dates fill.

Picking up and returning the car

At the airport

The company meets you as described on your voucher. Search with your real arrival time: some cars cannot be collected at night, and any out-of-hours fee is shown before you pay.

In town

Choose delivery to your hotel or address where the car offers it.

At pickup

Show your licence and payment, pay the rest of the rental, and walk round the car with the company.

Fuel

Return it with the same level you collected it with.

At return

Check the car together again. The deposit, if there was one, is returned under the company’s terms.

Questions

Do I need a credit card to hire a car?

Usually not. In Albania and Cyprus almost every car needs no credit card, and very few cars do in Montenegro. In Crete about a third of the cars ask for one, so use the filter.

Can I hire a car with no deposit?

Yes. Tick “No deposit” in the search, or choose Full Coverage Plus where a car offers it.

How old do I have to be?

It depends on the car: in Albania some can be hired from 18, others need 21 or more and up to three years of driving. Each car shows its own limits.

Can I drive to another country?

Yes, with a cross-border package added when you book, from Albania, Montenegro and some Cyprus cars. The car must come back to the country you hired it in.

Can I return the car somewhere else?

Within the same country, yes, with a drop-off fee shown in the price. Not in another country.

We are a group of seven. Which car do we need?

Filter for 7 seats or more. Nine seats was the largest car we found in Tirana, so a group of ten or more needs two cars. Check the boot size of the model against your luggage.

How much do I pay now?

An advance of 15 to 20% when you book. The rest is paid to the company when you collect the car.

Is insurance included?

Each car comes with basic cover and offers higher levels at a price. Standard cover does not include damage to the wheels, underbody, windscreen or interior; the car shows what each level covers.

Can I cancel?

Free up to 7 days before pickup (30 days for luxury cars and convertibles), or 24 hours before with the “Free cancellation” option. A 6% payment fee is not refunded.

Who do I contact after booking?

The rental company, on the phone number in your voucher. For anything about this website, email info@sabrecar.com.
